Beta-lactam antibiotics have been commonly used in general practice since their invention; however, most causes of immunological drug reactions are allergic responses to beta-lactams.[32] Hypersensitivity reaction against penicillin application causes anaphylactic reactions in all penicillin modifications. Five to ten percent of patients with penicillin hypersensitivity, especially those with early manifestations, are also hypersensitive to cephalosporins.[33] Adverse reactions to penicillin occur in approximately 10–20% of treatment courses[34–36] and fatal penicillin-induced anaphylaxis occurs at the rate of 0.002% among general population.[34] True penicillin allergy is rare, with an estimated anaphylaxis frequency of 1–5 in 10,000 cases of penicillin therapy.[35]
