Several kinds of alkaloids are found in different plants, vinca alkaloids being some of the most common, and here including vincristine and vinblastine, isoquinolone alkaloids. The vinca alkaloids are used as important anti-cancer drugs in therapeutic formulations such as vincristine and vinblastine. The production of the vinca alkaloids is very low in plants, which makes them even more special and expensive in pharmaceutical drugs. Oxidation of the methyl group in vinblastine converts it into vincristine. Both vincristine and vinblastine are found in the callus cultures of the Catharanthus roseus (Iskandar and Iriawati, 2016) and they show significant anti-cancer activities. Microtubule stability plays a vital role in several cellular events like cell division, which cause microtubules a significant target for the anti-cancer drugs or chemotherapy (Jordan and Wilson, 1998). A wedge is introduced at the interface of two tubulin molecules by vincristine and vinblastine that averts the accumulation of heterodimers on the growing microtubules (Gigant et al. 2005). Mitotic spindle of dividing cells is not fashioned as a result of this, which caused the stimulation of c-Jun NH2-terminus kinase (JNK) (Gigant et al. 2005), phosphorylation of Bcl-2 (Ruvolo et al. 2001), arrest of G2/M and apoptosis (Wang et al., 2000). It has been described that proteins such as TCTP, FKBP59, L-plastin or HSP90 in CCRF-CEM leukemia cells are involved in initiating a cellular response to vincristine (Verrills et al. 2003). Moreover, it has also been reported that vincristine regulates the apoptosis of human tumor cells through the NF-kappaB/IkappaB pathway (Huang et al. 2004).

This work primarily focuses on green synthesis method for synthesis of copper oxide from Catharanthus roseus. Researchers reported that Catharanthus roseus (C. roseus) (Apocynaceae) is one of the important medicinal plants, due to the presence of the indispensable anti-cancer drugs, i.e., vincristine and vinblastine. Roots of this plant are the main source of the anti-hypertension alkaloid ajmalicine. It contains more than 130 mono-terpenoid indole alkaloids.[25] It has medicinal importance owing to the presence of alkaloids like ajamalicine, serpentine and reserpine, which are well known for their hypotensive and antispasmodic properties.[26] Improving glucose uptake in pancreatic or muscle cells could amend the hyperglycemic conditions of type 2 diabetes.

To address this limitation, our team previously developed an analytical method for wipe sampling and analysis that was capable of simultaneously detecting six antineoplastic drugs from a single sample (Jeronimo et al. 2015). In consultation with local health care organizations and for the purpose of field evaluations, we subsequently expanded this method to detect 10 drugs commonly used in BC cancer treatment centers—CP, methotrexate (MTX), 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), oxaliplatin (OXP), vincristine (VNC), paclitaxel (PTX), vinblastine (VNB), vindesine (VND), docetaxel (DTX), and ifosfamide (IF) (Colombo et al. 2017). Nine of these drugs were selected for inclusion in our current method as they are often prepared and administered in combination. The tenth, VND, was included for convenience given its chemical similarity to VNC and VNB. Consequently, as many as 750 analyses were possible (25 samples per site × 3 sites × 10 drugs). Confirming surface contamination from multiple antineoplastic drugs using a single sample, our second objective, is critical in our attempt to characterize the spread of contamination of these agents in our health care settings. Our analytical method is also capable of achieving detection limits generally lower than those previously reported (Jeronimo et al. 2015; Colombo et al. 2017).

Catharanthus roseus is medicinal plant as well as ornamental plant. All parts of the plant including leaf, root, shoot, and stem contains more than 200 alkaloids, which are used for therapeutic purposes against several diseases. The most important alkaloids vinblastine and vincristine are derived from leaves and they exhibits anti-cancer and anti-diabetic property (Kaushik et al., 2017). Plectranthus barbatus is a traditional medicinal plant not only in India also used at different countries including Brazil, Africa, and China, reported for to cure gastro intestinal problems, respiratory disorder, anti-cancer, ocular and skin infection, anti-diabetic, and for cardiovascular disorder (Alasbahi & Melzig, 2010).
