The East-West (EW) pipelines span 1204 kilometers between “A” and “Y” (AY pipeline) and are served by 11 pump stations distributed according to the hydraulic requirements of the AY pipeline system. The East-West Pipeline crude oil pipeline system consists of two large-diameter parallel pipelines (48-inch AY-1 and 56-inch AY-1 loop) running from “A” plants in the Eastern province to the “Y” crude oil terminal on the seacoast. Currently, the 56-inch AY-1 loop (AY-1L) is the only remaining pipeline transporting four crude grades to “Y” crude oil terminal. About 173 km of the 56-inch AY-1L pipeline is coated with PE and has been in service since 1989.

The Phase 2 pipeline is a 200 km long and 762 mm diameter subsea oil export pipeline connecting offshore platforms in Caspian Sea and onshore oil terminal. High waxing tendency of the oil makes wax deposition severe within the pipe, hence daily pigging was scheduled at the design stage to maintain hydraulic capacity. However, problems with the isolation valves on the offshore pig launchers caused some difficulties for regular pigging operation. Thus extended pigging interval triggered excessive wax volume to the onshore oil terminal and impaired downstream production. After a significant upset to downstream process, no pig was launched. Additional pressure drop up to 15 bar was observed, which severely harmed oil transportation (Stevenson et al. 2015).

Petroleum products produced at the Abadan refinery in southern Iran, such as kerosene, gasoline, and diesel, are transported to the Ahvaz oil terminal and stored in numerous storage tanks. Then, according to schedules, these products are transported from the Ahvaz terminal to Tehran and other cities throughout Iran. A 16-in diameter pipeline with a length of 136 km transports products from Abadan to the Ahvaz oil terminal stations. Additionally, a 55-km-long 10-in diameter pipeline transports petroleum products from the Ahvaz oil terminal’s reservoir tanks to the next pressure boost station.
