If no SF can be aspirated, the material in the needle may nevertheless be expelled on a slide and examined for crystals or, alternatively, stained or cultured for bacteria. When septic arthritis is suspected, the joint may be irrigated with a small volume of saline and the withdrawn fluid cultured for organisms.
