Teflon is an accepted cause of polymer fume fever. Teflon flu is well recognised as a cause of fume fever and is a non-metal example of inhalation fever. Tachyphylaxis does tend to occur with continued exposure and symptoms present sometimes at the weekend when exposure stops. Onset times can vary but commonly quoted as between 4 and 10 hours.

In cases of “Teflon toxicosis,” as the bird poisonings are called, the lungs of exposed birds hemorrhage and fill with fluid, leading to suffocation. DuPont acknowledges that the fumes can also sicken people, a condition called “polymer fume fever.” DuPont has never studied the incidence of the fever among users of the billions of nonstick pots and pans sold around the world. Neither has the company studied the long-term effects from the sickness, or the extent to which Teflon exposures lead to human illnesses often believed erroneously to be the common flu.400

Inhalation of fumes released when PTFE is heated to high temperatures can result in a form of acute lung injury known as polymer-fume fever.1,2 Clinical manifestations typically include fever and other constitutional symptoms. Several reports of granulomatous pneumonitis in PTFE spray workers have also been published. 3,4 It is uncertain whether long-term exposure to PTFE and compounds used in its manufacture, such as PFOA, cause chronic lung disease. The purpose of this report is to detail the pulmonary pathologic findings in an individual with long-term occupational exposure to PTFE and PFOA and discuss the techniques used to detect fluorine in lung tissue.
