Following the interview, the patient was made familiar with the procedures relative to the urine collections and was assigned to a group for psychotherapy, reporting once weekly in the evening for a 1-hour session. After attending the clinic for 53 days, Mr. H. had his first positive specimen for narcotics. He had taken cough syrup with codeine and terpin hydrate. In the patient’s words, “I wasn’t feeling right. Nerves I guess. I am nervous anyway. I went to see my wife on Saturday and I got real upset. I took it when I got back.”

A major source of pulp and tall oils in the deep south of the U.S. The wood is very hard, heavy, strong, coarse grained, and durable. It is used for construction and railroad ties.8 According to Morton, terpin hydrate is the main synthetic product of turpentine used in pharmaceutical preparations, used as an expectorant in humans and for veterinary bronchitis. Other synthetics produced from pine are anethole, camphor, and DL-menthol. Tall oil rosin contains sterols, mainly sitosterol. Russians built a factory in 1968 to produce steroids from pine pulp extractives. They are also pioneering in the commercial production of vitamin A and E.17 Synthetic materials derived from turpentine are used in perfumery and to impart flavors suggestive of cinnamon, citrus, lemongrass, licorice, nutmeg, peppermint, and spearmint. Menthol from turpentine is added to cigarettes and cosmetic and toilet products.

The current study also found that PSDs were perceived by the veterans to provide a steady and additional source of personalized support. This is consistent with findings in the field. Problematic substance use compounds the challenges PTSD-diagnosed veterans face in their lives, including strained relationships, a sense of detachment, daily functioning difficulties, and violent behavior (Veterans Affairs Canada [VAC], 2017, 2017a). Recovery from the problematic use of substances is increasingly recognized as an individualized, ongoing process comprised of various pathways and supports (Kougiali, Fasulo, & Van Laar, 2017; McQuaid et al., 2017). In a recent Canadian survey, 88% of respondents identified their relationship with animals or pets as an important support in their recovery from addiction (McQuaid et al., 2017). The human-animal connection is a form of attachment that develops between a person and an animal involving unconditional love, security, trust, and attention (Terpin, 2004). The importance of connection as a support in recovery from problematic substance use is gaining increased attention (Mate, 2009; Weiss, 2015). In a VAC study of 10 veterans matched with a PSD, the dogs were identified as: “acting as a socialization agent; contributing to a feeling of safety; and detecting and intervening when the Veteran is anxious, depressed or aggressive” (VAC, 2018c, para. 7).
