Monographs of essential oils that have caused contact allergy / allergic contact dermatitis
Published in Anton C. de Groot, Monographs in Contact Allergy, 2021
Rose essential oil is obtained from the fresh flowers of R. damascena by hydro- or steam-distillation. Because of the labor-intensive production process and the low content of oil in rose blooms (about 3,500 to 4,000 kilograms of rose flowers are necessary to produce one kilogram of rose oil), rose oil is very expensive and is often called ‘liquid gold’. Rose oil is primarily used as a fragrance ingredient in the perfumery and cosmetics industry and is included in a large number of fine fragrances, creams, soaps, lotions and other cosmetic products.

Anxiety and pain increases catecholamine release, which causes vasoconstriction, increased muscle tone and decreased uterine blood flow, loss of uterine contractions can lead to slow progression in labour. Also, olfactory stimulation by rose oil induces physiological and psychological relaxation effects (Igarashi et al. 2014). Rose scent is effective on the central nervous system. It induced encephalin and endorphin secretion in brain (Ikei et al. 2014). The results of Roozbahani, and Vahaby researches indicated that inhalation with rose water was not effective in decreasing duration of labour (Roozbahani et al. 2015; Vahaby et al. 2016). In kheirkhah study women received inhalation and foot bath with rose essential oil 1% at three stages (4–5, 6–7 and 8–9 cm cervical dilation) while control group received routine care. No significant difference was found between the two groups regarding the mean duration of the first stage of labour while the mean second stage of labour was significantly lower in aroma group (Kheirkhah et al. 2013).

In qualitative or descriptive evaluation of histological slides under light microscope, rats in the negative control group showed normal histological features of seminiferous tubules with normal epithelial cells and interstitial tissue; however, in diabetic rats of Group II, structure of seminiferous tubules was damaged and abnormal arrangement of seminiferous cells was evident, accompanied by apoptosis and presence of pyknotic cells. Administration of rose oil, especially at higher dosages, resulted in a degree of improvement in seminiferous and interstitial structures compared to the positive control group (Figure 1).

Indeed, a few studies pointed out the stress-relief properties of aromatherapy practice. For instance, inhalation of fragrances has been used to counteract autonomic dysfunction associated with obesity, hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases (Goes et al., 2012; Niijima & Nagai, 2003; Peng et al., 2009; Shen et al., 2005; Shiina et al., 2008). Haze et al. reported that rose oil caused a decrease in plasma adrenaline concentrations, and concluded that essential oil inhalation may be used to modulate sympathetic hyperactivity (Haze et al., 2002).
