Leonard Colebrook was also responsible for the introduction of chloroxylenol, a chemical related to carbolic acid, as suitable antiseptic to kill streptococci on the bare hands. The antiseptic became known as Dettol (Hare, 1970).

His surgery is limited in both premises and equipment. He stands to treat his patients, who sit on a folding chair. A simple awning protects them from the scorching sun and monsoon rain. A bowl of dettol-infused water is used for disinfecting instruments. A bucket of cold water and steel cup are used for hand-washing and mouth-rinsing.

Superficial infection of the suture lines is also fairly common in the first few weeks. These can safely and effectively be treated by washing in warm water. Baths should be taken as often as possible, as they are usually very effective at achieving cleaning of the labia. Some patients also find it easiest to dilate in the bath, and this is worth trying in patients who are finding dilation difficult. Adding salt or antiseptics such as Betadine and Dettol to the bath water has not been shown to be of any additional benefit.

After the confirmation of Diabetes Mellitus, the rats were anesthetized with ether. The dorsal surface hair was shaved with an electric trimmer. An outline of the wound area was created with methylene blue stencil. Excision wounds of approximately 2.5 cm in length and 0.2 cm depth was generated using toothed forceps, surgical blade and pointed scissors along the methylene outline. The wound was sterilized using Dettol to prevent any infection. The rats were carefully monitored for any infection. The day on which the wound was created was considered to be day 0th.The granulation tissue developed on the wounds was excised on day 4th, 8th and 14th post wound formation day and stored in deep freezer (−40 °C) for protein assessment. Percentage wound closure and wound area was measured on days 0, 5, 8, 11, and 14 for all the rat groups [31].

Regarding clinical treatment options, Matz et al. [31] outlined research protocols on rVSV-ZEBOV (trade name for Ervebo) initiated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) showing its approval in December 2019 as the vaccine against the Zaire ebolavirus. This implies that there were no known EVD treatment or vaccine options at the time of the Nigerian and West African deadliest EVD outbreaks between 2013 and 2016. Rather, the emergency response model coordinated by Nigerian health agencies during the period were designed to merely avert further human viral spread of the EVD virus by isolating and managing suspected infected persons. According to Njidda et al. [32], the idea of NCDC was initially conceived in 2007 to respond to public health emergencies. It was however established during the Avian Influenza Project in 2011. Although its utmost value manifested during the successful coordination of Nigeria’s federal, state and local health agencies against the EVD outbreak in 2014. On social media, all forms of misinformation prevailed – non-clinical therapies and self-medication were recommended as preventive and curative measures and the outcome was a lot of casualties as would be discussed later. The most controversial cases of misinformation during the Ebola outbreak were directives from social media that everyone should bathe with salt water and drink salt water every midnight [28]. Some other directives include: ‘take back Ebola with Dettol, salt and hot water; eat bitter-kola, Kola nuts and bitter Kola has been found to halt Ebola its track in laboratory tests; homeopathic remedies can be highly effective in pandemics’ etc[33].

A randomisation table was generated for the participants in Excel. The participants were then randomised to use one of three hand sanitisers to disinfect both hands for the recommended disinfection time – minimum 30 seconds. The disinfectants were Dettol (Reckitt Benckiser, Sydney, NSW, Australia), Zoono (Zoono Group, Sydney, NSW, Australia) and Doxall (Wintermute Biomedical, Bundoora, Vic, Australia). Table 1 shows the main ingredients in each of these products, and the products will be referred to by their main disinfecting agent from now on, i.e. alcohol, quaternary ammonium or capric acid.
