Electricity generation
Published in Sven Ruin, Göran Sidén, Small-Scale Renewable Energy Systems, 2019
The motor of a water pump is another example of a load, which can be powered directly from a PV module or array, if suitable components are used. In developing countries, often sunny, where water supply is a problem, solar-powered pumps can contribute to a solution. Water is pumped during the day up to a reservoir, which can then be tapped when water is needed (Fig. 2.9). Instead of storing the energy, the product is stored and the needs can be satisfied around the clock.
Water Currentturbines for Pumping and Electricity Generation

As mentioned above, the ex works cost of a Sudan built turbine is £2,600 at a production rate of between ten and twenty per year. This is about one tenth of the cost of a solar powered pump of similar daily output and one third the cost an equivalent wind pump. In Egypt where about 80% of the parts and materials could be locally manufactured the ex works price in 1992 was calculated to be £1,470 at 50 units per year and £1,200 at 200 units per year (Ref:4).

When compared with grid-connected pumps, another advantage of small- to medium-sized solar-powered pumps is that they can be easily transported, for example on a trailer, which allows seasons to be lengthened or facilitates the rotation of grazing areas and so increases the economic benefit.

Solar-powered pumps are the pumps that run on electricity generated by PV panels. Due to lower maintenance costs, the operation of solar-powered pumps is more economical. The solar-powered pump has less environmental impact as compared with pumps powered by a diesel engine. The solar pump plays an important role where grid electricity is unavailable.
