Ignition and fuel
Published in Andrew Livesey, Motorcycle Engineering, 2021
To control the flow of air into the engine, and hence the engine speed, a throttle body similar to that in a carburetor is used. This is connected by the accelerator cable to the accelerator (or throttle) pedal. The throttle butterfly is connected electrically to the ECU.

A throttle position sensor is used to supply information as to whether the throttle is at idle, full load or somewhere in between. Many cars do not have a throttle cable but instead use an electrical actuator controlled by the ECU.

The main function of the throttle valve in the engine is to regulate the airflow, which is important for the efficient operation of the engine. Basically, the throttle valve is a mechanical valve driven by a dc servo motor and hence it consists of two subsystems: electrical and mechanical subsystems. The electrical subsystem is the armature circuit of the dc motor, while the mechanical subsystem involves a return spring and throttle plate. Indeed, the dc motor and throttle valve plate are connected by a gear reduction unit. The throttle body and its schematic are shown in Figures 1 and 2, respectively.

An air intake system is one of the most critical components in an automotive engine. There are three critical embedded sensors in the system for measuring the amount of air and enabling continuous airflow into the engine: Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor, Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) and Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor. The MAF sensor determines the mass flow rate entering the engine. In the air intake system, the throttle body controls the amount of air flow into the engine. A TPS monitors the throttle plate position. An MAP sensor provides the intake manifold pressure information to the electronic control unit.

AFR control has been employed using various techniques [33–35]. The SMC technique is used for AFR control in [36] with the design of the MIMO controller for various airflow disturbances. A nonlinear approach based on Takagi-Sugeno’s model is presented in [37] to design the AFR control law for IC gasoline engine. In [38], A PI like fuzzy controller has been presented that has self-tuning capability and is highly robust. In [39], the AFR controller has been designed using a smooth supper twisting SMC algorithm. A fuzzy SMC strategy has been presented in [40] for the lean-burn SI engines in the presence of periodic disturbances. A Fault-Tolerant (FT) fuel system for the IC gasoline engines has been presented in [41] with AR-based on lookup tables to provide approximate values of the faulty sensors to the controller. We have utilized this model in our current study and implemented a novel robust PFTCS for the AFR control. In this model, AFR control is constructed with four sensors that are described as follows: Throttle Sensor: supplies the position angle of air throttle actuator to the Engine Control Unit (ECU).Speed Sensor: supplies the speed signal of engine to the ECU.Exhaust Gas Oxygen (EGO) Sensor: delivers feedback of oxygen contents in the exhaust gas of the engine. Greater EGO value shows the presence of more air and causes increase in the fuel amount to the engine. If EGO value is small, the controller decreases the fuel input to the engine.Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor: supplies feedback of suction air pressure. Since suction air pressure is less than atmospheric pressure (1 bar), absolute pressure units are used [41].
