Corrosion of 2024 alloy after ultrasonic impact cladding with iron

The specimen was placed in a socket made in the hardened steel holder and underwent the quasi-hydrostatic shock compression during each impact. The estimated strain rate ranges 0.1–1.5 s−1. During the UIT process lasted for 250 s about 5·105 impacts induce severe plastic deformation of the specimen surface. During the multiple impactions, the pin tip was also deformed sequentially ‘spreading’ over the specimen surface (Figure 1(b)). Two series of specimens were processed either in the ambient air (air-UIT) or in the argon environment (argon-UIT). In the latter case, a special sealed chamber filled with gaseous argon was used to prevent the surface oxidation at UIT [16].
