The Bolivar ASR trial site is situated adjacent to the Bolivar Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) on the Northern Adelaide Plains (Figure 1). The target aquifer is the lower of two tertiary limestone aquifers within the Port Willunga Formation (T2). The brackish T2 aquifer is separated from the overlying fresh T1 aquifer by a 7.5m thick confining layer of Munno Para Clay. Mineralogy is predominantly calcite and quartz with small amounts of ankerite, hematite, microcline, albite and pyrite. The average transmissivity has been estimated at 180 m2/day (Martin et al., 1998).

Carbonatites are igneous rocks that have more than 50% modal composition of carbonate minerals (Le Maitre 2002). These carbonate minerals are mostly calcite (CaCO3), dolomite (CaMg(CO3)2), siderite (FeCO3) and ankerite (Ca(Mg,Fe2+,Mn)(CO3)2).
