Wire is available bright-drawn or hot-rolled depending upon its size and the use to which it is going to be put. Bright-drawn, high carbon steel wire (piano wire) is used for making springs. Copper wire is used for electrical conductors. The smaller the diameter of any wire the greater the length that can be made in one piece.

Electrodes for fine wire EDM created by Akiro Okada et al. have a new coating that makes them easier to work with.[10] To achieve high-speed and high-precision wire, a high tensile strength piano wire is covered with an electrically conductive brass coating. Using wire with a relatively significant Surface Roughness enhanced machining rate owing to high discharge frequency, as was experimentally tested the influence of brass wire electrode Surface Roughness. Observation of the working gap at high speed throughout the procedure further indicated a more consistent distribution of discharge locations. This distance between wire electrode and workpiece surface also had its electrostatic field examined.[11]
