Evidence exists that osteoclasts display several other functions. For instance, they produce clastokines that control osteoblast during the bone remodeling cycle. Recent evidence shows that osteoclasts may directly regulate the hematopoietic stem cell niche (Charles and Aliprantis 2014). This furthermore supports the theory of the bone being an endocrine organ.
