The diagnosis of bladder cancer is made by urine cytology cystoscopy and biopsy. The majority of bladder tumours are superficial and CT or MRI is limited to patients with invasive cancer to assess tumour invasion into the bladder wall and beyond into the surrounding pelvic tissues. Lymph node status is assessed.

Cystoscopy (cystourethroscopy) is an examination in which a scope, a flexible tube and viewing device, is inserted through the urethra to examine the bladder and urinary tract for structural abnormalities or obstructions, such as tumors or stones.

Cystoscopy accompanied by ureteroscopy is the gold standard investigation for tumours of the lower urinary tract. Retrograde pyelography may also be performed at the time of cystoscopy where upper urinary tract tumour is suspected.

We have previously published our technique on mid-urethral sling excision [26]. An urethra-cystoscopy is first performed with a 17.5 Fr female scope to assess the course of the sling which, if too tight presents as a kink of the urethra. We prefer to perform a transverse vaginal incision along the direction of the vaginal ridges to allow access to the lateral extensions of the MUS and to facilitate repair for overt urethral injury during MUS excision by allowing the insertion of a Martius fat pad graft and/or a fascial patch as tissue interposition over the urethral repair. In some instance, hydro-dissection may be useful, although not routinely utilized, if prior procedures have resulted in a very scarred and thin vaginal wall.

The study included two groups of patients, 30 patient with BC and 15 patient (Control group) who presented with hematuria but with a normal urologic workup (including cytology, cystoscopy, and upper tract imaging). Voided urine samples (50–100 ml) were obtained from all patients after obtaining informed consent. Cystoscopy and histological findings were used as the reference standard for BC detection. Tumors were staged according to the TNM classification of UICC criteria [9] and graded according to WHO criteria [10]. Patients with a history of another urological malignancy were excluded from the study. The patients did not receive any therapy and were newly diagnosed.
