Indocyanine green (ICG) and infracyanine green are standard dyes for staining of internal limiting membrane [49]. These dyes possess strong affinity for collagen type 4 and laminin, which are important components of internal limiting membrane. The problem with ICG is that it is toxic to retinal photoreceptors and retinal pigment epithelium. It is safe to use ICG in concentration of 0.05% and osmolarity of less than 290mOsm. The toxicity of ICG is mainly attributed to iodine, which acts as a solvent for the dye. ICG also causes phototoxic damage to the retinal cells. Infracyanine green is relatively less toxic because it does not contain iodine.
