About one-third of women who report rape develop long-term psychosocial problems, which tend to be more severe and chronic than after non-sexual violence (Resnick et al., 1993). Rape trauma syndrome was first described in the 1970s (Burgess and Holmstrom, 1974), but never formalised or validated as a psychiatric diagnosis. Nevertheless, it may be helpful in understanding some of the apparent paradoxes in the observed behaviour of victims of serious sexual assault, including the tendency to acquiesce rather than fight back when attacked, the submissive stance taken by many during the act and the gratitude sometimes expressed towards their attacker, when freed.
Interpersonal Violence: What Undergraduate Nursing Students Know

Jennifer L. Collins, Laura Thomas, Huaxin Song, Alyce Ashcraft, Carrie Edwards
A review of curricula from two undergraduate baccalaureate nursing programs were reviewed. These two programs were the traditional undergraduate BSN program and the accelerated BSN program. Accelerated undergraduate students were students who had a prior bachelor’s degree and were enrolled in the first month of their 12-month BSN program. These two programs are delivered using two different curricula; however, the program outcomes are equivalent. According to the review students receive didactic and role modeling content regarding interpersonal violence in nursing care related to community health and mental health. Topics in both curricula included family violence and long-term mental health implications, neglect, rape, assault, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Rape Trauma Syndrome, and crisis intervention.

The first theory to explain effects of rape was recorded by Burgess and Holmstrom31 and labeled Rape Trauma Syndrome (RTS). A second major effect of rape found in numerous studies is Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).32,33 Burgess and Holmstrom34 integrated the concept of RTS into PTSD, labeling it “Rape Related Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.”34(p49) Previous research identifies an urgency for assessing rape-related PTSD given its prevalence today.35
