Semi-structured interviews such as the Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia (K-SADS), which is aimed at children aged 6–18 years, or the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Assessment (CAPA), aimed at children aged 9–17 years, are recommended as potentially useful in aiding diagnosis, although they may need modification to be useful in the clinical setting of a busy CAMHS community team.

Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children – Present and Lifetime (K-SADS-PL): The children’s diagnosis was determined using the K-SADS-PL, which is a semi-structured diagnostic interview designed to assess current and past episodes of psychopathology in children and adolescents according to DSM-III-R and DSM-IV criteria. Child and parent ratings are combined in a compound summary [25]. The form consists of three sections; the first section questions socio-demographic characteristics, the second questions current and past episodes of psychiatric symptoms, and the third section evaluates the general functions of the children during the evaluation. Mood disorders, psychotic disorders, anxiety disorders, elimination disorders, disruptive behaviour disorders, alcohol and drug use disorders, eating disorders, and tic disorders can be evaluated in the interview. The Turkish translation and validity and reliability study of K-SADS-PL was performed by Gökler et al. [26].

First, to determine psychiatric disorders of children and adolescents, Kiddie-Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia, present and life time version (K-SADS-PL) was applied to parents by a specialist of child psychiatry. Clinical evaluations were conducted at baseline and week 4, week 8, week 12 or week 16. The ADHD symptoms and side effect scales were collected systematically by an interview with the same child and adolescent psychiatrist. Parents’ ratings were obtained on Weiss Functional Impairment Rating Scale-Parent Report Form (WFIRS-P) twice. WFIRS-P ratings from parents were obtained at the baseline and at the first control after reaching the optimal drug dosage. In the case of patients who did not achieve optimal drug dosage and who were using lower doses of medication, WFIRS-P scale was filled at the end of the 16-week follow-up. Also Barkley Side Effects Rating Scale (BSERS) ratings were used and they were completed at week 4 after the drug started of each medication condition. The patients were evaluated different times during the study (some of the patients in three times and some of the patients in four times); therefore, scales for assessment were not used for each session.

Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children - Present and Lifetime Version (K-SADS-PL): K-SADS-PL is a widely used semi-structured diagnostic interview tool [29]. It inquires about current and past episodes of child and adolescent psychiatric disorders and allows a diagnosis to be made. The Turkish version of the K-SADS-PL was reported to have good test-retest and inter-rater reliability [31]. In the current study, K-SADS-PL was used to make the diagnosis of ADHD along with allowed comorbidities such as enuresis and tic disorders.
