Depending on the location and histological characteristics, CC is subdivided into intrahepatic, perihilar, and distal subtypes. Intrahepatic CC (ICC) is a well-differentiated adenocarcinoma that demonstrates various growth patterns and represents about 10% of all bile duct neoplasms. Perihilar CC (PCC, also known as Klatskin tumor) is a moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma (mostly of mucinous type), comprising about 50% of all bile duct neoplasms. Distal CC (DCC) is a poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma, accounting for about 40% of all bile duct neoplasms.

We retrieved relevant literature through searching PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and the Cochrane Library. It has been updated on December 7, 2019. Searching items were as follows: (prognostic nutritional index OR PNI) AND (bile duct cancer OR bile duct neoplasms OR biliary tract cancer OR gallbladder cancer OR cholangiocarcinoma). Publication language was restricted to English. The reference lists of retrieved literatures were also checked to identify potential inclusions.
