Video groups will continue to have valid use in many therapeutic situations, particularly as we align more with the NHS Long Term plans for people to manage their own healthcare more autonomously by engaging with digital tools and remote monitoring means to do this, and group therapy offers a pathway for this. In speech and language it could be effectively used not only as rehab or treatment interventions in adult services, but also as preventative parent or carer skills workshops, and in paediatric and young people's services. Examples of these that are already being offered by NHS and healthcare organisations include autism support (CYGNET and diagnosis Healios), early language skills, makaton, sign and sign or rhythm and rhyme sessions.

Signing and symbols are not only used for communicating with the hearing impaired, but also to augment other communication systems. British Sign Language and Makaton are the most common signing systems; Makaton is the most popular and most appropriate for children and young people with severe and complex needs. Widgit Software also produces a large range of materials using symbols to aid inclusion.

Children with ASD tend to adjust to schedules that include repetitive patterns and activities, and they respond negatively to change, in contrast to their peers of typical development (TD) who adjust relatively easily to new conditions. As every child with ASD has different abilities and needs, a personalized program must be designed for each child separately. In recent decades, various methods of therapeutic intervention have been developed for children with ASD, among the most common of which are Applied Behavioral Analysis, the TEACCH Autism Program, the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), the MAKATON language program, the SPELL framework, and Sensory Integration Therapy (Francis 2005).

After three years, at home and at school, simple signs and gesture were used, alongside spoken language, to communicate with C. He showed little inclination to use sign but understood some pictures and symbols. He was most interested in written words and could request a drink or different foods at snack time by writing the words (Stage Eight). After five years, written words, basic signs and gesture were used at home alongside spoken language and at school, a simplified sign system (Makaton) alongside speech, symbols and the written word. C predominantly used written words to communicate and could write the words for a range of objects and some verbs (Stage Nine).

As shown in Table 5, out of the eight symbol sets queried, constructed pictures, gestures, Picture Exchange Communication System3 (PECS®) symbols (Bondy & Frost, 1994), and Picture Communication Symbols4 (PCS™) were the most frequently reported. Of the 10 symbol systems, the alphabet, sign language, and hand-cued speech were the most frequently reported. Few respondents had used symbols requiring training, like Makaton and Blissymbols5.
