The AP 2 + 2 system consisted of two layers of a high-quality primer comprising red lead applied in linseed oil, over which were applied two or more AP layers. The system comprised a top paint layer of leafing aluminium pigments and MIO pigments bound in a mixture of linseed and tung oil (IVA 1935, 1961; Tengstrand 1948).9Tung oil is a drying oil that consists of ~84% of α-eleostearic acid, a conjugated fatty acid with three double bonds which is readily oxidized and polymerised (Xia and Larock 2010).
