Model-Based Flexible PCBA Rework Cell Design
Published in Cornelius Leondes, The Design of Manufacturing Systems, 2019
Soldering irons (SI) and vacuum desoldering irons (VDI), are popular in manual rework, but they do not satisfy the needs of automated rework. However, if these methods are combined and an automated version of a soldering iron designed for robotic soldering applications is used, most TH component rework can be accomplished. This method relies on the use of a vacuum desoldering iron to desolder each leg and then suck molten solder sequentially from each joint, and a soldering iron and flux-cored solder wire (self-fluxing soldering) which is fed continuously to the end tip of the soldering iron to form a solder joint. Continuous solder wire fed soldering irons have been used for a long time to solder odd-form components [47] and in other robotic soldering applications. Furthermore, they can be operated by computer control and carried by most industrial robots [10].
Not Your Public Library’s MakerSpace: The Nuts and Bolts of a Physical Place

In addition to tools in the space, there need to be some basic materials. Things like cables, cords, sticky notes, pens, clear tape, glue guns, bags, poster tape, hemostats, solder, desolder, leads, probes, tie wraps, and Loctite should be on hand. A starting shopping list is displayed in Figure 14.4.

After fitting each wire, the solder was completely removed from the solder pad of the weight block using desolder braid. The block was then weighed using an Oertling NA114 high-precision analytical balance (readability down to 10−4 g) to ensure any solder residual had been removed before starting the process again for the next wire. Once all of the wires had been soldered in place, the small wire tails protruding from the solder joints were carefully removed using a scalpel to cut the wire as close as possible to the solder joint.
