Shunt active power filter, as shown in Figure 1, helps in mitigation of harmonic components from the source side by providing compensating current at the point of common coupling (PCC) and in this process improves the power quality of the supply. SAPF injects this 180-degree phase shifted current into at PCC, hence improves power quality. Here, three-level Neutral point clamped converter is used as SAPF.

The series active power filter and shunt active power filter provide harmonic regulation along with compensation of the real and reactive power (Akagi 1996). The active power filters are more affordable and the complexity in control is minimum (Singh, Haddad, and Chandra 1999). The harmonic suppression is also carried out at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC) by the active power filters (Ayse et al. 2003). A lot of research work has been carried out in integrating clean Distributed Energy Resources (DER) with the active power filters. The shunt active power filter has an inability of regulating the voltage at PCC. The series active power filter cannot regulate the current harmonics. The FACTS devices are custom power electronic devices whose primary role is to provide active and reactive power compensation along with improving the power quality. Despite active power filters having some demerits while performing as a separate unit, these demerits can be rectified by making both shunt and series active power filters operate simultaneously. Unified Power Quality Conditioner system is a FACTS device, which is a combination of both series and shunt active power filters coupled together by a DC link element (Fujita and Akagi 1996; Dheeban and Muthu Selvan 2020).
Predictive Control of Four-Legged Inverter Using Sliding-Window Discrete Fourier Transform Computation for Harmonic Recession

The purpose of shunt active power filter is to introduce compensating current to the grid which is identical to the harmonic content present in the load current. This results in distortion-free, sinusoidal voltage supply in load-grid interface. Figure 3 shows the control flow of harmonic compensation and predictive control in four-leg inverter. The four-leg shunt active power filter is connected in parallel to the grid.
