Floor coverings

The vast majority of carpet made today is made by the tufting process. The procedure involves the sewing or punching of face pile yarns into a backing by a special machine that is equipped with numerous needles. The tufts are inserted lengthwise into a primary backing. In finer carpet the tufts are close together, giving the finished product a denser quality and appearance. The tufts are then set in place with the use of a latex compound that is laminated to the secondary backing. This final backing or layer gives the carpet additional strength. The primary backing used in tufted carpet is usually made of polypropylene. For fine-gauge carpet, polyester is sometimes used in place of polypropylene. The secondary backing for tufted carpet (Figure 3.1) is also mostly made of polypropylene, with jute or foam used to a lesser extent.
Digital tufting bee: expanding computational design boundaries through collective material practice and social play
Published in Digital Creativity, 2023
This research focuses on collective material practices of tufting, which is a textile technique that creates sensory-rich surfaces by inserting loops from one side of loosely woven fabric. Each loop’s end points toward the other side to provide warmth or tactility. Figure 1 shows a person holding a tufting gun to produce a rug. During tufting, makers will stand behind the canvas, shooting yarn toward the front. Therefore, makers need to know that the final output will be mirrored horizontally. The invention of machine tufting guns speeds up rug hooking processes, encouraging more hobbyists to explore rug-making on various scales. Tufting also been describe as drawing with yarn which can create a strong visual aesthetic with rich texture. During design processes, artists can directly sketch patterns on tufting cloths or project designs onto canvases. Compared with other textile crafting techniques that are more abstract such as weaving and knitting, tufting allows artists to think graphically in creative processes. Additionally, makers accumulate muscle memory and knowledge of materiality in processes by threading yarn through tufting guns, maintaining the tension of working surfaces, adjusting the height of loop piles and controlling tufting directions.
