Once signed up for SMS-based services, the HIS can automatically schedule the SMS service for appointment reminders and confirmations and process the SMS request from users. No staff intervention is required for handling SMS-based services. The SMS gateway connects the HIS to the end users over the mobile operator's short message service center (SMS-C) or through an SS7 (signaling system no. 7) connectivity provider.

The tracking system functionality in DCE is based on sending and receiving text messages. To choose the infrastructure that would support such functionality, we consider the following alternatives: Using an SMS Gateway. This option is available in companies that offer solutions to send and receive SMS through an SMS gateway, and the integration is performed using an API.To develop a Mobile App to translate the SMS to http requests to the server (and vice versa). The SMS are sent to the mobile number of the intermediate node, which executes an App that interprets and translates the SMS to an HTTP request and forward that information to the server.
