Following on from the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) is an international initiative set up by the European Commission, hosted by the UN Environment Programme, tasked to study the economics of biodiversity loss (Blowfield 2013). It is based on the principle that ecosystems can only really be appreciated if the economic value can be shown (ibid). It is one avenue to make sustainability comprehensible to homo oeconomicus, who understands the value of (financial) capital.

We tried to assess several regulating ecosystem services for a traditional nature management land in the European coastal Arctic zone of Russia and elaborate the methodology for social (ethnic-cultural) ecosystem provisioning ecosystem services assessment. This investigation follows the mainstream of the ongoing TEEB joint project of CAFF (Arctic Council) (Progress Report on the Economics and Biodiversity (TEEB) 2015, Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystems and their Services (MAES) 2016, UNEPGEO projects and WWF projects), UNEPGEO projects and WWF projects. The true value of TTNU will give them a chance to provide ecological buffer zones for the Ice Sea Road coastal infrastructure thus preserving Arctic ecosystems and indigenous peoples identities.
