Distillation is a method of separating the components of a mixture based on boiling points by means of evaporating and then condensing the vapor into liquid. In steam distillation, steam is supplied as a means of heat to evaporate heat sensitive compounds at lower temperatures. The end product is a two-phase system with a fraction of water and the organic distillate. The desired component from the two-phase system can be separated using partitioning, decantation, or any other suitable method. This process is extensively used in industries to extract oils from plants (e.g., eucalyptus oil and orange oil are produced commercially using the steam distillation method). Distillation also is used for obtaining distilled beverages from fermented products or for producing bio-oil after pyrolysis as explained in the following sections (Naik et al. 2010).

The treatment of rheumatoid joint pain, muscle and joint torments and aches is well reported from EOs of this plant (Mulyaningsih et al., 2011; Sadlon and Lamson, 2010). Eucalyptus oil has exhibited its, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiproliferative, and antibacterial activities and scientists have demonstrated its adequacy certain in the treatment of different metabolic and irresistible diseases. The results are promising and can be utilized for the treatment of multifactorial infections of different origin in human (Aazza et al., 2014; Mulyaningsih et al., 2011).

Nowadays even aromatherapy is used for the treatment of COPD. It involves the use of many essential oils which help the patient to calm down and improve breathing. Essential oils like eucalyptus oil and Myrtol standardized essential oil can help patients with COPD (Figure 7.8). Eucalyptus oil contains the natural ingredient eucalyptol which has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and mucolytic properties. It also opens up the airway in the lungs and prevents flare-ups of COPD.

The chemical composition of the EOs extracted from E. globulus and M. piperita as well as the mixture of 70:30 was analyzed by GC-FID and GC-MS (Figure 1). The major chemical components of eucalyptus oil were: 1,8-cineole (56.6%), p-cymene (15.4%), α-pinene (11.7%), γ-terpinene (9.3%), Exo-isocitral (2.5%), α-terpineol (1.1%), and globulol (1.1%). Meanwhile, the major chemical components of peppermint contained menthol (34.6%), menthone (19.2%), iso-menthyl acetate (8.9%), 1,8-cineole (7.7%), p-cymene (5.7%), neo-menthol (5.2%), iso-menthone (3.6%), menthofuran (3.1%), and β-caryophyllene (2.8%). Twenty-five major compounds were found in the mixture of EOs (E. globulus: M. piperita) following the ratio of 70:30, Table 2. The main compounds observed were 1,8-cineole (40.5%), menthol (13.2%), p-cymene (9.5%), α-pinene (8.1%), menthone (6.8%), and γ-terpinene (6.3%) (Table 2; Figure 1). Our findings differed slightly from those described by Emamjomeh et al.[19] in terms of chemical compounds, with particular attention to 1,8-cineole (59.08%). Moreover, the current data is in accordance with Taherpour et al.[20] in terms of M. piperita, with slight differences and special attention to menthol (29.38%). The slight difference between the literature and the current experiment might be due to background genetic, region, and plant condition, which significantly affects the type and percentage of phytoconstituents.[21]

Eucalyptus globulus Labill. (Lan An) (E. globulus) as an evergreen tree is originally from Australia and also widely cultivated in Mediterranean and subtropical [48]. It is traditionally used for the treatment of asthma and bronchitis. Moreover, the essential oil and extracts from this plant possess antimicrobial, antifungal, anthelmintic and anti-diabetic properties [49,50]. In one study, Eucalyptus oil aromatherapy exhibited considerable anti-fatigue, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects in rats [51].
