Enolate Anions and Condensation Reactions
Published in Michael B. Smith, A Q&A Approach to Organic Chemistry, 2020
The reaction of two different esters to produce the Claisen product is a mixed Claisen. The enolate of one ester condenses with the carbonyl of a different ester. What are the possible products if ethyl propionate and ethyl butanoate is heated to reflux in ethanol containing sodium ethoxide?

In view of above, the present study attempts to develop and characterize an efficient low-cost heterogeneous catalyst by utilizing a waste material namely, FAC. The performance of the prepared catalyst was examined through esterification of propionic acid and ethanol to produce ethyl propionate which is a flavor ester with a fruity odor reminiscent of pineapple and utilized in various food industries. The complete reaction mechanism for the esterification of propionic acid with ethanol to produce ethyl propionate and water is given in Scheme 1 and can be explained as follows (Chandane et al., 2017c):Protonation of propionic acid (P.A.) by carbon-based acid catalyst to form a carbocation.Nucleophilic attack of carbocation by the hydroxyl group of ethanol.Proton transfer from hydroxyl group of ethanol to the carbonyl oxygen of propionic acid (P.A.).Removal of water by delocalization of positive charge, stabilization of reaction intermediate, regeneration of acid catalyst to produce ethyl propionate (E.P.).

Ethyl propionate is generally deployed in the processing of food, flavour industry, and a model for fatty acid ethyl esters used as first-generation biodiesel (Contino et al. 2011; Badawy, Williamson, and Xu 2016). This ester is a significant reagent in pharmaceutical industries, for example, in the production of anti-malaria drug such as pyrimethamine. Ethyl propionate has additionally other promising regions of its use, for instance, in the production (Kufian and Majid 2010).
