Determination of Hydrogen Sulfide Content of the Atmosphere
Published in James P. Lodge, Methods of Air Sampling and Analysis, 2017
Hydrogen sulfide is collected by aspirating a measured volume of air through an alkaline suspension of cadmium hydroxide (4),(5). The sulfide is precipitated as cadmium sulfide to prevent air oxidation of the sulfide which occurs rapidly in an aqueous alkaline solution. Arabinogalactan is added to the cadmium hydroxide slurry prior to sampling to minimize photo-decomposition of the precipitated cadmium sulfide (5). The collected sulfide is subsequently determined by spectrophotometric measurement of the methylene blue produced by the reaction of the sulfide with a strongly acid solution of N,N-dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine and ferric chloride (4),(7):

A series of 3-D ionic liquid containing COFs was successfully synthesized by using a solvent 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis-[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl] imide [BMIm], yielding a 3D-IL-COF-1 as a light yellow crystalline solid [7]. The obtained COF had high crystallinity, surface area, and adsorption selectivity for gases like CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 . The pursue of less complicated approaches led to a mechanochemical synthesis route for the development of porous COFs because it includes simple steps that comprise monomers grounded at room temperature. Liquid-assisted grinding can also be performed to improve the system's homogeneity. As an example, solvent-free mechanochemical synthesis of 1,3,5-Triformylphloroglucinol (Tp), aromatic diamine [p-phenylenediamine (TpPa-1), 2,5-dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine (TpPa-2) and benzidine (TpBD)] under the aldehyde-amine Schiff base condensation reaction along which 1-2 drop of mesitylene:dioxane (1:1) was placed in a mortar and grounded by using pestle at room temperature which after 5 min was converted to a light yellow powder and again ground for 15 min. The powder color changed to orange and later after 40 min to a dark red color which was mopped with anhydrous acetone and dichloromethane to remove the oligomeric impurities. Then it was dried at 180°C under vacuum for 24 h. COFs obtained through this method presented similar properties to those synthesized through solvothermal [8, 9].

Biofilm formation by sulphate-reducing bacteria on different metals and their prospective role in titanium corrosion

Sulphide was estimated using the original procedure [16] where H2S and acid-soluble metal sulphides convert N, N-dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine to methylene blue complex (which was measured at 670 nm), in the presence of acidified ferric chloride oxidant. The intensity of the methylene blue colour developed is directly proportional to the amount of sulphide present in the sample.
