Surface Acidity and Catalytic Activity

Equation 2.22 is therefore analogous to the benzidine → benzidine blue transformation, but here it is the exchangeable cations (counterions) that act as electron acceptors rather than structural Fe3+ or edge-surface Al3+ ions. It is not always easy, however, to differentiate between exchangeable and structural ferric ions. As mentioned earlier, the activity of (anhydrous) Fe3+-montmorillonite in catalyzing the oxidative oligomerization of chloro- and methoxy-phenol (Desjardins et al. 1999) may be ascribed to the ability of exchangeable ferric ions to act as electron acceptors (cf. Table 2.4) as Sawhney et al. (1984) and Yong et al. (1997) have earlier suggested with respect to o-methylphenol and 2,6-dimethylphenol. Fe3+-montmorillonite is also effective in catalyzing the condensation of aromatic aldehydes with dimedone and aniline (Song et al. 2007; Luo et al. 2008). Subsequently, Wallis et al. (2011) used mixed Fe3+/choline montmorillonite for the Lewis acid catalyzed coupling of 2-naphthol and anthrone, and the conjugate addition of indole to methyl vinyl ketone.

The intramolecularly, hydrogen-bonded anthrone isomer, 1-methylamino-(9,10H)anthraceneone, is formed more slowly, and its stability in the sediment-water system was much greater than the other nonhydrogen bonded isomer, 4-methylamino(9,10H)anthraquinone.

Proximate analysis was performed for both crude and defatted WMS powder. Total protein content was evaluated by Kjeldahl's nitrogen estimation test. Carbohydrates were analyzed by Anthrone method.[17] Moisture, ash, and fiber contents were determined by AOAC Official Methods of Analysis 2006 of crude and defatted WMS powder.[18]

Utilizing the anthrone reagent technique, total carbohydrates were determined. A standard curve was prepraed by taking a graded concentration of glucose and the concentration of carbohydrates was estimated using standrad curve [17].
