Relationships between footwear, foot structure, and foot muscle strength

Clinical and research data support the hypothesis that injury may result from muscle weakness and/or a lack of control of the foot core just as lumbopelvic core instability is a risk factor for lower extremity injury. These common injuries include plantar fasciitis, metatarsalgia, medial tibial stress syndrome, and tarsal tunnel syndrome. In the elderly, weak intrinsic foot muscles (IFM) have been shown to be associated with impaired balance and increased risk of falls (Menz, Morris, & Lord, 2005; Mickle, Munro, Lord, Menz, & Steele, 2009).
