Collecting duct

A collecting duct is a duct in the kidney that receives filtrate from multiple nephrons and conducts it to the renal pelvis. It is responsible for the final regulation of urinary volume and composition, and is the primary site of hormonal regulation of reabsorption. The cells of the collecting ducts have fewer mitochondria than those of the distal tubule. The collecting ducts are involved with final regulation of urinary volume and composition. Reabsorption of water takes place which concentrates the filtrate including urea, one of the more important waste products. Overall, reabsorption is a very efficient process with 100 litres or so of filtrate a day being converted to excretion of 1–1.5 litres of urine per day in humans.

In the CCRC type of mass, the cancer cells originate from the proximal tubule and are characterised by malignant epithelial cells with clear cytoplasms, which exhibit acinar or sarcomatoid growth pattern. On the other hand, the RO mass, originates from the cortical collecting duct and is a benign neoplasm of the kidney composed of cells with mitochondria-rich eosinophilic cytoplasm. These two types of renal tumours are often indistinguishable of routine visual analysis of the imaging data.
