Patients suffering from postoperative or chronic pain usually live with low quality of life [1]. They have to be tethered to an external device or be maintained as inpatients. Efficient postoperative pain management is important for improving quality of life, and lowering the risk of developing chronic pain after surgery [2,3]. Local anesthetics block the transmission of painful stimuli to the brain, and have been applied in the field of postoperative analgesia to manage acute and chronic pain [4,5]. However, their cardio and neurotoxicity, as well as short half-life stress the need for developing implantable devices for tailored local drug release [6,7].
