In the second prospective study, 12 children with ASD received HBOT at 1.3 atm/24% oxygen and 6 children received HBOT at 1.5 atm/100% oxygen. Biomarkers were measured before and after 40 HBOT sessions.449 Behavioral improvements were observed in these children and plasma oxidized glutathione levels did not significantly change at 1.3 atm (p = 0.557) or 1.5 atm (p = 0.583). Since oxidized glutathione is exported from cells when intracellular levels exceed the redox capacity,451 this finding suggests that intracellular oxidative stress did not significantly worsen with HBOT at these two commonly used lower HBOT pressures in ASD.449 Carbon monoxide poisoning, cyanide poisoning, crush injuries, gas gangrene (a form of gangrene in which gas collects in tissues), decompression sickness, acute or traumatic inadequate blood flow in the arteries, compromised skin grafts and flaps, infection in a bone (osteomyelitis), delayed radiation injury, flesh-eating disease (also called necrotizing soft-tissue infection), air or gas bubble trapped in a blood vessel (air or gas embolism), chronic infection called actinomycosis, diabetic wounds.

Our study showed that some of isolated airborne bacteria belonged to risk group 2, according to the Commission Directive (UE) 2019/1833, and as such they pose a health threat to people exposed to them. Among others, bacteria of Actinomyces genus exhibit strong allergenic properties, and the species A. israelii is considered to be an etiological factor of actinomycosis (Valour et al. 2014). In turn, strains of Prevotella genus may be responsible for hematogenous osteoarthritis as well as wound and genital tract infections (Kierzkowska et al. 2016). It is extremely important considering the fact that women were part of the employees in the sorting cabins. Among the identified bacteria there were also those responsible for opportunistic infections of soft tissues, especially in the oral cavity, as well as sinusitis and pneumonia (Fusobacterium and Peptostreptococcus) (Nagy, Boyanova, and Justesen 2018). It is also important that some of the identified strains (Fusobacterium and Prevotella) are Gram-negative bacteria, which are a source of endotoxin. Endotoxin has strong pro-inflammatory properties and may adversely affect efficiency of the respiratory system (manifested by a reduction in spirometric parameters, mainly forced expiratory volume in one second – FEV1).
