Post-coital bleeding (PCB) is non-menstrual bleeding that occurs immediately after sexual intercourse. It can be due to a benign cause such as cervical ectropion. However, it is often caused by an infection. Infections can cause the cervix to become inflamed and more prone to bleeding. A diagnosis is usually reached by a process of elimination.

Cervical ectropion is defined as the presence of cervical columnar epithelial cells on the ectocervix. The blood vessels under the columnar epithelium are more visible than the vessels under the squamous epithelium because the cervical columnar epithelium is thinner than the squamous epithelium. This results in the reddish appearance of the cervical ectropion during vaginal examination via speculum.
