Wisdom
Published in Robert S. Holzman, Anesthesia and the Classics, 2022
The incorporation of virtue provided an additional dimension to wisdom, illustrated by the Section 2 figure of Arete. Sophia was a combination of the Classical notion of nous, intellect with the ability to understand and discern reality, and epistēmē, teachable knowledge, sometimes equated with science. In other contexts, nous has been equated with common sense and awareness, all integral to successful clinical medicine.
Ethics and evidence-based practice

To take the health visitor example, the actual goal is, something like, to take the steps most likely to lead to a happy and healthy parenting of the child. Despite the health visitor knowing that breastfeeding is in general associated with healthier children, in this case she can see, on the basis of knowledge from beyond health research, that it might well go wrong and that not pushing breastfeeding is a better option. Much of this is down to nous, particularly here the ability of the health visitor to discern the relevant particulars (Sherman 1989). EBP-style evidence will be of great import but is defeasible by local particular factors. Thus, the EBP evidence shows that babies who are breastfed generally do better on a large number of indicators that are important in this specific case; as such, the health visitor will be inclined to recommend it. However, she discerns specific differences here; the mother’s awkward relationship with her own body; her family’s lack of support; her signs of emotional distress – and these cause the health visitor to choose a different action.

nous template determines the shape and volume of the skeleton [16]. Various growth factors are reportedly involved in this process, i.e., BMP families [17], transforming growth factor-beta (TGF- β) [18], and insulin-like growth factor (IGF) [19] as well as their receptors. In this chapter the gene expression profile of potent chondrogenic factors in the process of OLF is introduced. Process of Ossification of the Spinal Ligament
Reflections of an outgoing CTS president
Published in Canadian Journal of Respiratory, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine, 2021
