Theory and Practice of Behaviour Modification

A functional analysis aims to identify what purpose a behaviour serves and identify the context and behaviours that are maintaining that behaviour. When initiating a functional analysis, it is important to identify the predominant inappropriate behaviour. Behaviour modification is most effective when a limited number of behaviours are targeted at any one time. A functional analysis can be most informative when the targeted behaviour is complex and the function is not easily identifiable.
The young person
Published in David B Cooper, Practice in Mental Health—Substance Use, 2018
The purpose of a functional analysis is to understand which factors maintain the persons substance use behaviour. This usually involves the following factors: social: social network consisting of people using substancesaffective: using substances for relief from strong negative emotions or for pleasurecognitive: the belief ‘once I have this craving for the drug I cannot stop myself from using it’physiological: withdrawal symptomseconomic: money received in exchange for drugs.
Clinical governance and competent practitioners

The development of competency frameworks relies on collaboration between key stakeholders, including employers, employees, service users, staff associations and education and training designers and providers. The framework design process includes functional analysis, which is a process that underpins the development of occupational standards. Functional analysis is a holistic, systems-based analysis approach used to analyse whole occupations in terms of outcomes and the purpose of work activities rather than specific activities, procedures and methods. This approach is used to facilitate the development of national occupational standards, which are presented in the form of a ‘functional map’.
Evaluation and Maintenance of Behavioral Interventions for 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome

A functional analysis is an assessment tool used to identify environmental variables that may be maintaining destructive behavior.25,33,39 By systematically altering antecedent and consequent events in test conditions, and comparing responding to a control condition, clinicians can identify causal relations between behavior and the environment. The results of functional analyses can lead to the development of effective function-based treatment procedures. Results of meta-analyses and epidemiological studies indicate that behavioral interventions for destructive behavior are more effective when they were based on assessments that include functional analysis.36,40 Following direct observations and interviews with support staff, functional analyses of challenging behavior were conducted for Patient 1’s inappropriate touching of others and for Patient 2’s aggressive and disruptive behavior.

Nevertheless, there are some limitations in our study should be noted. First, due to the limited GWAS datasets of gut microbiota available online, it may influence accuracy of the results, although we have performed a replication stage to reduce chance of making mistakes. Besides, for gut microbiota, the detailed procedure of GWAS could not be performed as we wanted, which also had influence on the accuracy of gut microbiota related SNPs. The further functional analysis is needed to validate our findings in our future studies. Two-sample MR approach cannot figure out the possibility that the associations discovered are pleiotropic rather than causal, and even then, one cannot not fully discard the possibility of reverse causation. Therefore, we should seriously explain the associations of gut microbiota and brain-related diseases and traits.

Second, it is important that adequate assessments are completed that isolated the establishing operations and controlling variables associated to the sleep problem since there is a lack of consistency within the literature on assessment measures and procedures. For example, a functional analysis is the gold-standard in behavioral interventions for the assessment problem behavior.70 A functional analysis involves the systematic evaluation of the environmental variables maintaining problem behavior and has been proven to improve intervention effects. Some limited research supports the use of functional analysis technology to evaluate sleep as a moderator of daytime challenging behavior71,72, but future research might incorporate this technology into the assessment and treatment of sleep behaviors.
