The Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) was used to determine severity of symptoms of children with ASD. This Likert-type scale, based on behavior observation, is assessed on a scale of 1–4 for each item. In addition to measuring severity of autism, it also yields a total score that is useful for diagnosis. Subjects scoring between 38 and 60 constitute an autistic group with severe symptoms, those scoring between 30 and 38 a group with mild to moderate symptoms, and those scoring between 15 and 29 a group with no autistic symptoms [16]. The validity and reliability for Turkey of the Turkish-language version of the scale have previously been investigated [17]. CARS was applied to children diagnosed with ASD by an experienced child and adolescent psychiatrist.
