Radiation Damage of Skin and Mucous Membrane
Published in Kedar N. Prasad, Handbook of RADIOBIOLOGY, 2020
The erythema proper generally develops in the third or fourth week. The skin becomes red, warm, edematous, and tender, and it exhibits a burning sensation. The erythema proper appears to be associated with obstructive changes in arterioles.

Heartburn The patient complains of a burning sensation that occurs in the chest and may extend up into the throat. It is often positional, worse on lying down, and therefore also worse at night. It can be exacerbated by bending over, for example when doing up shoe laces. It is important to ensure that it is not related to exercise, as the symptoms of angina pectoris and heartburn can be difficult to differentiate: ‘Describe the burning sensation. Where is it?’‘Does it go anywhere else? Is it related to food intake?’
Acute Lung Injury In Children Due To Chemical And Physical Agents
Published in Lourdes R. Laraya-Cuasay, Walter T. Hughes, Interstitial Lung Diseases in Children, 2019
There may be immediate gastrointestinal and respiratory symptoms, and delayed CNS and pulmonary effects.234 Many times the child is found next to an open container of hydrocarbon with spilt liquid on face and clothing and the odor of the agent on the breath and body.225, 243, 244 Generally, the child had been left alone temporarily just prior to the ingestion.229 An initial burning sensation may be felt in the mouth and throat.216, 224, 225, 243 Usually (in 95 to 100% of cases), there is immediate gagging, choking, and coughing.205, 216, 219, 226, 245 Cough characteristically appears immediately after ingestion.207 The child may be transiently short of breath, cyanotic, dyspneic, and tachypneic.216, 219, 225, 245 If the ingestion is massive or there is delay in bringing the child for attention, there may be fever, persistent cyanosis, and dyspnea.204, 217
The electronic tongue: an advanced taste-sensing multichannel sensory tool with global selectivity for application in the pharmaceutical and food industry
Published in Pharmaceutical Development and Technology, 2023
Different formulations, both with and without medicines (placebo), have had their bitterness evaluated. The Alpha Mos Electronic Tongue has been used to assess the stability of taste and odor in placebo formulations using various pharmaceutical ingredients (Wang et al. 2022). By matching bitter placebos, good identification of the various doses of additives was also achieved with excellent reproducibility. On multiple samples aged using various aging techniques, the successful separation of the distinct scents, as well as the monitoring of taste degradation, were obtained. Data processing and identification methods included Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Discrimination Function Analysis (DFA), and Partial Least Square (PLS) for quantification. By displaying data for various formulations (syrups, oral dispersive, gels, etc.) and diverse medication types, the principle of qualitative measurements with the electronic tongue was discovered (Ciosek and Wróblewski 2007). Most medications have a naturally bitter taste, which can cause localized tongue numbness or a burning sensation in the throat. The effectiveness of the masking agents used to lessen the bitterness of medications must therefore be evaluated. Finding a medicine formulation that has the bitter taste masked requires comparing many placebo and drug formulations (Del Valle 2012).

The International Classification of Headache Disorders defines BMS as an intraoral burning sensation, reappearing daily for more than 2 h per day over more than 3 months, without clinically visible causal reasons (Zhang et al., 2016). This syndrome is difficult to treat. Dry mouth (xerostomia), BMS and alteration of taste are particularly prevalent in menopause-age women (Wardrop et al., 1989). The International Association for the Study of Pain and International Headache Society defines it as a “characteristic entity, including all forms of burning sensation in the mouth with stinging sensation or pain, in an oral mucosa that appears clinically normal in the absence of local or systemic diseases or alterations” (Gladstone & Dodick, 2004). Oral discomforts like dryness have been reported to be strongly correlated with the menopause (Asplund & Åberg, 2005; Nederfors, 2000; Ship et al., 2002; Streckfus et al., 1998; Yalcin et al., 2005). A health-promoting lifestyle can have a positive effect on overcoming menopausal symptoms (oral discomfort like dryness) and includes nutrition management (Park, 2020). The consummation of chokeberry juice improves lifestyle health benefits (Szajdek & Borowska, 2008).

One concern based on our results is that still 27% of patients rate one or more VM symptoms with a score of 4 or higher at the end of external (C)RT. This implies that this group of patients needs more supportive care measures consisting of the use of analgesics and a stricter follow-up by the RT team. One of the frequently described VM symptoms is pruritus, as confirmed in other trials (Kirchheiner et al. 2014; Zolciak-Siwinska et al. 2015). This symptom could be aggravated since pelvic RT makes the patients more vulnerable to yeast infections due to damage to the vaginal mucosa. Vaginal yeast infections are characterised by itchiness, a burning sensation, irritation, odour, and vaginal discharge. In case of yeast infections special measures have to be taken into account such as antifungal creams, ointments or suppositories with miconazole or clotrimazole (Hainer and Gibson 2011). Pain and a burning sensation are two symptoms, which are hard to differentiate. A burning sensation during urination could also be caused by cystitis, which is a common complication of patients undergoing pelvic RT (Hainer and Gibson 2011). Moreover, the pain score could have been influenced by the general pain felt by the patient due to dermatological, gastrointestinal, skeletal, or genitourinary toxicity (Viswanathan et al. 2014).
