The psychic skin
Published in Stacy K. Nakell, Treatment for Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors, 2023
Welton and Kay (2015) elucidate the chemicals underlying this interplay, In humans, oxytocin is associated with a number of factors that affect attachment including trust, empathy, eye contact, and generosity. Oxytocin infusions in healthy individuals tend to decrease anxiety and the stress associated with social situations while shifting attention from negative to positive information.(First section, Paragraph 2) In other words, we gain the ability to calm ourselves down through the experience of being calmed by a soothing other, and when we internalize this experience, our brains gain the ability to release the chemicals that bring about relaxation.
Third Stage Of Labor

Compared with oxytocin alone, ergot alkaloids in addition to oxytocin are associated with a statistically significant reduction in the risk of PPH when compared to oxytocin alone for blood loss of 500 mL or more. A network meta-analysis found a significant difference in blood loss 1000 mL or more [14]. There were no differences in blood transfusion, retained placenta, or other neonatal outcomes. Unfortunately, the adverse side effects when ergometrine is added to oxytocin are important to consider, including nausea, vomiting, and hypertension [15].
Primary Postpartum Haemorrhage

As primary PPH is largely unpredictable, all women should ideally give birth in a hospital. Although this may not reduce the incidence of PPH, early measures can be taken to manage the condition. Early breastfeeding, which stimulates the release of oxytocin, is a simple measure that aids uterine contractions and reduces the risk of uterine atony.
Emerging therapeutic targets for anorexia nervosa
Published in Expert Opinion on Therapeutic Targets, 2023
Oxytocin has been primarily, besides its role during lactation, implicated in social interactions but also food intake. One randomized controlled trial investigated the effect of intranasal oxytocin versus placebo in patients with anorexia nervosa during an inpatient nutritional rehabilitation program. While no group difference was observed with regards to weight gain, oxytocin improved eating concerns and reduced cognitive rigidity compared to placebo [77]. This might well be an effect of the repetitive administration as a single application had no effect on anxiety or food intake [78]. However, it is to note that already a single dose of intranasal oxytocin reduced salivary cortisol (often to be increased in patients with anorexia nervosa) compared to placebo which was associated with a decrease in attentional avoidance of food images [78] pointing toward an association of stress signaling and food avoidance.
The effect of oxytocin massage and music on breast milk production and anxiety level of the mothers of premature infants who are in the neonatal intensive care unit: A self-controlled trial
Published in Health Care for Women International, 2022
Oxytocin massage is effective in stimulating oxytocin release, and it is used to increase milk release of mothers who are in the lactation period (Jannah & Widyawati, 2017; Sulaeman et al., 2016). In this study, the quantity of breast milk measured after the administration of oxytocin massage to the mothers was significantly higher than the amount of breast milk measured in the control session (Tables 2 and 3). Sulaeman et al. (2016) found that the amount of breast milk production was higher in mothers who received oxytocin massage. Our study findings are compatible with this study (Sulaeman et al., 2016). In two studies conducted, mothers who received oxytocin massage were found to breastfeed their babies without any problem (Johan & Azizah, 2016; Widia & Meihartati, 2018). In these studies, oxytocin massage was determined to positively affect breastfeeding (Johan & Azizah, 2016; Sulaeman et al., 2016; Widia & Meihartati, 2018). In general, it can be stated that oxytocin massage contributes to breast milk release and maintaining breastfeeding effectively by increasing oxytocin release in the mother.
The Health Benefits of Sexual Expression

Changes in oxytocin represent short-term effects of sexual activity that may contribute to its benefits. Oxytocin is a neuropeptide hormone from the hypothalamus. It is best known for its role in social and parenting behaviors, including lactation and labor. Oxytocin also plays a role in mammalian reproductive behaviors, including pair bonding (Veening et al., 2015). Intimate touching, such as caressing, massage (both the active and the passive element of it), and breast stimulation all stimulate an increase in oxytocin. Numerous studies show that oxytocin increases during sexual arousal (Gimpl & Fahrenholz, 2001) and orgasm (Carmichael et al., 1987). These increases not only have sedating effects but also increase interpersonal trust (Kosfeld et al., 2005; van Anders et al., 2013), confer anti-stress, antidepressant, and anxiolytic benefits (Scantamburlo et al., 2007), and immunologic and anti-inflammatory effects (Carter et al., 2020).
