Breast Abscess

Breast milk can be cultured, but may indicate colonization rather than infection, and is not routinely recommended (only recommended for mastitis failing to respond to antibiotics). Ideally, pus should be sent and specimens should be plated on several media including polysorbate (lipophilic bacteria) and incubated for 5–7 days. Recurrent breast abscesses should also be cultured for fungi and acid-fast bacilli and be sent for histopathology (to identify granulomatous disorders and malignancy).

A common inflammatory disorder of the pilosebaceous unit. Incidence high during puberty and generally improves by early–mid 20s. Primarily due to androgen-induced sebum production. Lipophilic bacteria (especially Propionibacterium acnes) colonize the hair follicles.

In contrast to the gut microbiome which stabilises at around three years of age, the skin microbiome alters during puberty when sebum production increases. This facilitates the growth of more “lipophilic” bacteria such as Propionibacterium spp. and fungi such as Malassezia spp. These age-related changes in the skin microbiota may correlate with the prevalence of some skin disorders such as acne.

Meibum grading showed no change in the quality of the expressed meibum 1 and 2 months after treatment in both groups, but most probably the newly created meibum had much less lipophilic bacteria flora with less amounts of their irritating lipolytic enzymes.
