There is desiccation, corrosion, protein denaturation, liquefactive necrosis and bone decalcification; unrecognised injuries inevitably progress to extensive tissue destruction. Systemic hypocalcaemia leads to cardiac dysrhythmia; refractory (fatal) VF may be induced by the action of F- on the myocardium. Even 2% TBSA involvement may be fatal.

The femur specimen from each group were transferred to 10% (by weight) neutral-buffered formalin solution followed by bone decalcification, dehydration, and paraffin embedding. Bone fragments of 5 mm (thickness) were separated from the diaphysis, stained with haematoxylin–eosin for microscopic analysis (Bitto et al. 2008).
