The patient should also be psychologically stable and willing to trade skin excess for scars, through multiple operations and the gamut of complications. The ideal candidate for body contouring is a patient who has attained a stable weight but has excessive skin laxity of the lower trunk and thighs. A body lift is usually defined as treating multiple areas in one operation, especially buttocks, medial thighs and flanks. Those who still have significant firm fat deposits are not good candidates for contouring surgery.
Body Contouring
Published in M. Sandra Wood, Internet Guide to Cosmetic Surgery for Women, 2013
This chapter covers body contouring procedures, or reshaping of the body. These procedures make up a large portion of the cosmetic surgery procedures performed on women. Although liposuction (lipoplasty) is the primary surgical procedure in this group, it also includes tummy tucks (abdominoplasty), buttock augmentation, and calf implants. Please follow cross-references, which lead to other sections in this chapter or to other chapters. In general, the “common” name rather than the technical name is used for a procedure.
Taking control: FAQs and resources

Some patients will want to think about cosmetic surgery to deal with the excess skin. Body contouring surgery involves the surgical removal of excess skin and unwanted fatty deposits. As with all surgery, these procedures carry risks, including infection, poor healing, blood clots and scarring.

Body contouring is the targeted removal of limited amounts of adipose tissue to achieve a more aesthetically pleasing body shape. Non-invasive body contouring procedures have become very popular in the modern aesthetic practice as they can offer patients visually appreciable improvements in body shape and image, without more invasive surgical approaches and techniques. More invasive surgically oriented procedures are associated with inherent surgical risks as well as prolonged recovery times, and may not be the ideal treatment option for those patients who are anxious of and/or contraindicated for surgical approaches. Innovative energy-based cosmetic technologies such as laser, ultrasound, and radiofrequency (RF) have been developed for aesthetic medicine. These novel technologies have become very popular in fat reduction and body contouring procedures, as they offer patients an excellent treatment alternative to more traditional surgical body sculpting approaches.

In some other countries, socioeconomic factors play an important role in the decision to pursue post-bariatric body-contouring surgery. Many patients desire body-contouring surgery, but the cost of the procedure may be a limiting factor. In Finland, the public health care system covers the surgeries considered to be reconstructive procedures that are determined to be medically necessary [11]. The procedures are not dependent on patients’ insurance or own funding. Everyone who suffers and has medical problems because of surplus skin after massive weight loss should be evaluated equally for LBCS. Therefore, the reasons for the discrepancy among patients’ desires and real practice in Finland could not be the costs of plastic surgery.

The number of people undergoing bariatric surgery is rapidly increasing and so do the numbers of patients in need for postbariatric surgery. The benefits of massive weight loss include a significant reduction of the overall risk for coronary heart disease, Diabetes mellitus type 2, herniated vertebral discs and osteoarthritis of the lower extremity together with an increased life expectancy. Unwanted side effects of massive weight loss include consequent skin excess with overhanging skin aprons causing intertrigo, a missing body contour and psychological suffering including social anxiety. Body contouring surgery is able to address these problems, alleviate patients suffering and increase quality of life [4,5].
