Structural steelwork and pipework
Published in Roger Timings, Fabrication and Welding Engineering, 2008
Both plain carbon steel and alloy steel pipes are available for high-pressure installations or where copper would be too costly and the risk of corrosion is low. Note that the wall thickness for water pipes is increased to allow for corrosion. The types of pipe available are: Hot-finished seamless (HFS).Cold-finished seamless (CFS).Electric-resistance-welded (ERW).Hot-finished seamless pipe can be used at the highest pressures and temperatures, depending upon its composition and specification. It has a rough finish and cannot be used with compression fittings. It is used with screwed and welded joints.
Hollow Structural Sections (HSS) in the 2005 AISC Specification
Published in J.A. Packer, S. Willibald, Tubular Structures XI, 2017
Another major item in Chapter B is the definition of design wall thickness for HSS. It “…shall be taken equal to 0.93 times the nominal wall thickness for electric-resistance-welded (ERW) HSS…”. This is to account for common manufacturing practice in the USA. The A500 material specification for HSS (ASTM A500–03) permits the wall thickness to be 10% less than the nominal thickness. Tube mills take advantage of this tolerance and consistently produce products with less than the nominal wall thickness unless a contract specifies otherwise.
Machine learning algorithms for failure prediction and yield improvement during electric resistance welded tube manufacturing

Tube-making process usually involve two types of tubes, i.e. seamless tubes and electric resistant welded tubes. Seamless tubes are straightaway manufactured from solid billet and hence doesn’t require any metal joining operation. Whereas, electric resistance welding tubes (ERWs) are manufactured by welding the flat sheets of metal along longitudinal direction. Thus, cross-section of ERW tubes have welded joint throughout its length. ERW tubes are primarily used in low- or medium-pressure application.
