Tableware refers to the dishes, utensils, and other items used for serving and eating food. Tableware is mainly earthenware to semivitreous porcelain bodies prepared for crockery and dinnerware sets. It is mainly triaxial bodies that are used, which are generally single fired between 1200°C and 1250°C, displaying moderate strength. Triaxial bodies contain plastic clay (preferably ball clay) ~25%–30%, china clay ~30%–35%, flint ~15%–20%, and feldspar ~10%–15%. The bisque-fired body is overglazed and matured at ~1050°C–1100°C. Due to the presence of a significant amount of china clay, the fired body shows complete vitrification with a porosity of <0.3%. A porcelain body is generally fired at a slightly lower temperature than vitreous/semivitreous triaxial/china clay bodies. The fired porcelain body constitutes mullite crystals suspended in a siliceous glassy matrix. The mullite crystals are needle shaped and form a continuous network throughout the glassy matrix. Mullite crystals rapidly appear when the temperature reaches ~1250°C and the weight percentage is enhanced as the temperature increases and remains stable up to 1545°C. During cooling, the interlocking mullite crystals with glassy matrix provide strength to the body.
