ISO containers are the strongest loading unit, as well as being stackable. They are, therefore, the most versatile. The key underpinning of successful intermodal transport was not simply the invention or adoption of these containers but their increasing standardisation. This was a long process (see Levinson [2006] for a detailed history and the role of the ISO) that resulted in a handful of main container types. The floor of a container must be strong enough to withstand the static and dynamic load forces of cargo as well as the dynamic load forces caused by stuffing and unstuffing. ISO 668 details the sub-base floor structure for containers giving specifications for the number and layout of transverse beam members and the load transfer areas for use when the container is transported by a vehicle. No such detail is given within the CSC, although it does identify these components as being structurally sensitive to the strength of a container.
