A flex sensor detects deflection or bending. A flex sensor could be used to determine the opening status of doors/windows by placing them at lock edges or livers. We can read the change in the resistance of this sensor when it experiences a bend. Materials such as plastic and carbon can be used in the design of this sensor. The carbon surface is set on a plastic strip, which can be turned away to modify the sensor's resistance. With the use of any controller, this change in value can be read.

The flex sensor is a variable resistor where the resistance of the sensor changes with respect to the bend of the sensor. This sensor can be used as door sensor, robot whisker sensor, a sentient stuffed animal, etc. Figure 8.13 shows the flex sensor.

Flex sensor is also known as bend sensor that helps in measuring the bending angle of any prototype-based application. The internal structure of the flex sensor is composed of a carbon strip that produces resistance variance whenever any bending is performed through this sensor. In normal conditions when no force is applied to the flex sensor, its resistance value is not increased i.e. it remains in its initial state. When bending is performed through a flex sensor, the internal resistance of carbon material is increased. Flex sensor works on the principle of voltage divider rule where Vin is the input voltage, Vout is the final output voltage, while R1 and R2 are combination of fixed resistances and resistance of flex sensor as shown in Eq. Movements during sleep were monitored using flex sensors (Mishra et al. 2018). A flex sensor can be used to measure bending. Its resistance increases when the degree of bending increases. The flat resistance range is from 7000 to 13,000 Ohms, and the 180° pinch bend would be at least twice the flat resistance value (Flex sensor data sheet 2014). We used tape to paste the flex sensor on the back of the pillow and connected it to an OMEGA Om-daqpro-5300 data logger which recorded the voltage every second. The voltage changed as the resistance of the flex sensor changed when the participants moved. We counted the number of movements by calculating the differences of the data from the next second to the previous one, and the participants were considered to move if the differences were larger than ± 0.001 Volt, which was not exceeded when the participants remained still. The number of movements per hour was also calculated and defined as the movement index.
Flexible and attachable inertial measurement unit (IMU)-based motion capture instrumentation for the characterization of hand kinematics: A pilot study

Flex sensor-based technology embeds different types of resistive bending sensors onto a stretchable glove for hand joint measurement. However, the repeatability of a flex sensor is low, and its accuracy decreases over time. Another limitation is that the flex sensor may only measure a single degree of freedom (DOF), which cannot meet the requirement for multi-DOF motion measurement of the hand.
