Desert, Desertification and Land Degradation
Published in Ajai, Rimjhim Bhatnagar, Desertification and Land Degradation, 2022
An ecosystem can provide the desired services only if the ecosystem is healthy and functioning in a normal way. However, if the ecosystem is degraded, the supply of goods and services from the given site gets reduced and the ecosystem is able to maintain only limited functions (FAO, 2010). The quality and quantity of the flow of the ecosystem services are related to the state and conditions of the ecosystem's health. Ecosystem health represents the sustainability of an ecosystem as a whole that requires minimal external support through management measures. We can also say that an ecosystem is healthy if it has the ability to maintain its structure and functions over time under external stress (resilience) (Burkhard et al. 2008).

Even though the textile industry generates huge economic benefits, due to its fragmented and unorganised functional operation, its impact on the environment is significant in terms of human and ecosystem health. The disposal of dyeing process-rejects in domestic areas away from actual industrial areas is a major threat. Particularly, dyeing operation is a major concern because synthetic dyes are used in most of the cases along with associated fixing chemicals/mordants [1]. The unorganised textile dyeing sectors in urban as well as rural areas are discharging the process effluents (dye based) into domestic sewers. In line with this, the present review puts forth a case study on Shiv Vihar located in Delhi, which employs indigo dye for denim colouring operations and its serious consequence on occupational health as focal point. The article in the following sections defines the problem and attempts to suggest possible remedial measures.
