The open-loop buncher system is tested in air environment after the buncher is assembled (Figure 4). The RF probe, connected to the oscilloscope, is placed on the central electrode of the buncher to indicate the bunching voltage. About 3 pF parasitic capacitance due to the probe is introduced in this configuration’ therefore', the matching circuit should be tuned again to get a resonance frequency of 70.5 MHz and input impedance of 50 Ω when the probe is settled down. A circulator is added between the amplifier and the matching circuit to protect the amplifier from reverse power. The open-loop bench test shows that 370 Vpeak is established on the central electrode of the buncher, and the corresponding RF power consumption is 37 W.
