ETC

Electronic toll collection (ETC) is a system that uses radio communications between a terminal inside a vehicle and transponders on the roadside to pay toll money without the vehicle having to stop. The system is based on dedicated short-range communications technology and uses a transponder placed inside the vehicle that is activated each time the vehicle passes a roadside sensor. Electronic toll collection systems (ETCs) are two-way radio communication systems that identify vehicles and/or their owners. An FM signal transmitted by a roadside antenna is received by an active transponder (tag) mounted on the vehicle windshield. The transponder responds by generating a microwave signal containing data stored in the tag. The transmitted signal is received by a roadside system that decodes the data and relays it to a computer for vehicle identification. Current RF tags utilize a few frequency ranges including 866 to 869 MHz in Europe, 902 to 928 MHz in North and South America, and 950 to 956 MHz in Japan and some other Asian countries.

Technical issues associated with toll collection—After several years of evaluating different options, the government chose a multilane free-flow system. It was designed and developed to provide an exclusively electronic and barrier-free toll charging system. The system allows electronic toll collection based on dedicated short-range communications technology through a transponder placed inside the vehicle that is activated each time the vehicle passes a roadside sensor. The system also allows video tolling for the collection of tolls from vehicles not equipped with the transponder, based on the automatic reading of license plates.
